In this program hosted by the Lancaster Civil War Round Table, Stephen Recker will discuss newest book, Shadowing Grant. After serving at Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville with the 130th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, Simon M. Whistler was commissioned Acting Assistant Surgeon, U.S.A. on board the U.S. Hospital Transport Connecticut. Being a civilian, and a curious one at that, Whistler took ‘liberties’ with his situation and kept a diary of his exploits. Starting in the 1880s, he turned his remembrances into a manuscript, finishing shortly before his death in 1905. The manuscript passed through to his descendants but has never been published or available to the public in any form. Until now.
