Circulation Desk Staff Member Job Description

Position Summary

Customer service is the primary focus of this job.  A successful candidate will be able to interact with people of all ages and should enjoy answering questions and explaining library services and programs.  The Library Circulation Desk Staff Member provides friendly, efficient, and knowledgeable service to library patrons. This role involves performing routine circulation tasks, assisting with technology, and supporting library programs and services. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, comfortable with computers, and enjoys working with the public in a welcoming environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Greet and assist patrons in person, by phone, and via email with a courteous and professional demeanor.
  • Perform basic circulation functions, including checking materials in and out, renewing items, placing holds, and issuing library cards.
  • Assist patrons with using library resources, including the Libby app and other digital lending platforms.
  • Use Microsoft Word and Excel for creating documents, reports, and tracking library data.
  • Design flyers, posters, and digital graphics for library programs using Canva.
  • Provide basic troubleshooting for public computers, printers, and other library technology.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential patron records in the library’s integrated system.
  • Shelve returned materials and ensure collections are organized and accessible.
  • Support library programs and events as needed.
  • Follow library policies and procedures to ensure a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; some college coursework preferred.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and basic internet navigation.
  • Familiarity with Canva or willingness to learn quickly.
  • Familiarity with Libby and library databases or willingness to learn quickly.
  • Ability to learn and use library circulation software.
  • Attention to detail and ability to multitask in a busy environment.
  • Ability to lift and carry library materials and stand for extended periods.
  • New hires will need to complete background checks pursuant to the Child Protections Services Laws.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to stand, sit and walk for extended periods of time and intermittently.
  • Dexterity is mandatory as this job requires frequent use of hands and fingers.
  • Ability to complete keyboard entry for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to talk, hear, and see.
  • Ability to lift 30 lbs., push carts weighing 50 pounds, and shelve materials on high as well as low shelves.

Salary

  • $13.51 per hour
