The Brethren’s House (1769)

The Brethren’s House Built in 1769 by Claus Coelln It was commandeered by General Washington in 1777 and used for a military hospital for eight months. Upwards to 1000 sick and wounded soldiers were hospitalized here during that period. Burial of 110 of these soldiers is remembered by a monument at the end of East Main Street. Many died from camp fever and it spread to the village and caused more deaths.
